PRESS RELEASE: In Shock and Mourning, Family of Roberto Calvario, 20—Killed by Chicago Police Tuesday—Calls for a Full and Fair Investigation

CHICAGO — On Tuesday night, while allegedly investigating a potentially stolen car, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) shot and killed 20-year-old Roberto Calvario, Jr. in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago.

Roberto was a lifelong Chicago resident, who attended the college-preparatory charter school Northtown Academy in North Park.

He is survived by his mother and family, who remember him as a loving and dedicated family member who loved riding and building bikes.

Today, reeling from the tragedy, the Calvario family is calling on Mayor Johnson, the CPD and its Civilian Office of Public Affairs, the City of Chicago, and the Cook County State’s Attorney to immediately conduct a full and fair investigation into the brutal death of their beloved son and brother.

The call for an immediate investigation was echoed by the family’s attorneys, David B. Owens and Maggie Filler of the civil rights law firm of Loevy + Loevy.

“Mayor Johnson campaigned on a promise of police transparency and accountability,” says Owens. “Today, we call on him to live up to that promise and provide this family with the answers they need about this horrific and unnecessary shooting. Conduct a fair and full investigation, respect the equal dignity of all involved, release any bodycam videos or other footage, and explain—if such a thing can possibly be explained—how an investigation into an alleged property crime justified the violent death of this young man.”

The Calvario family has requested that members of the media respect their privacy in this difficult time. All media inquiries and other requests should be directed to Loevy + Loevy using the contact information below.
