Alan spent 13 years wrongfully incarcerated. This settlement resolves Alan’s 14-year saga of litigation.
Alan Beaman was convicted of a crime he did not commit in 1993 and spent 13 years wrongfully incarcerated in Illinois. His conviction was overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2008 and he was exonerated in 2009.
“Those of us close to this case have known Alan Beaman’s conviction nearly thirty years ago was a miscarriage of justice,” shared Alan’s attorneys Locke Bowman and Jeffrey Urdangen. They added, “This settlement amount is welcome, though hardly sufficient to compensate Alan and his family for their suffering brought on by Alan’s 13 years of wrongful incarceration.”
The Normal, Illinois Town Council approved a $5.4 million settlement in April 2024.
“I can’t fix the past. No amount of money is going to give me those years back,” Beaman said in an interview after the settlement approval.
