Blood Orange’s front man Dev Hynes gave a speech on police brutality Friday night at Lollapalooza. He also wore a homemade t-shirt with names of recent victims of police misconduct, such as Eric Garner (the man who died last week after a NYPD officer put him in a chokehold) while his girlfriend and fellow band member, Samantha Urbani’s shirt read “Stop Police Brutality”. The band dedicated Friday’s performance to victims of police brutality and race-driven violence.
Hours after the performance, Hynes said that he and Urbani were assaulted by security officers at the festival and believes that their message to end police misconduct may have sparked the incident. Neither Hynes nor Urbani were seriously injured, but both were shocked and alarmed by the incident.
