Chicago Civil Rights Law Firm
Loevy & Loevy is committed to defending the United States Constitution, and our attorneys represent clients whose liberties have been violated. In that way, we are not unlike a private, quasi-ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). Contact us for skilled civil rights law representation, positive results, and your free initial consultation. Loevy & Loevy practices in several other civil rights areas: Some examples of our lawyers' work in civil rights law are as follows: Statesville Speaks: We are co-counsel with Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal and the Uptown People's Law Center on a lawsuit brought to defend the First Amendment right to publish a prison newsletter called Statesville Speaks. The litigation is pending before Judge Guzman, who recently denied the prison's motion to dismiss. Joseph Lopez: Mr. Lopez was falsely accused of murder and held for an unconstitutional period of time (more than 48 hours) before being brought before a judge. During discovery, we learned that this practice was widespread in the Department, and as a result of our lawsuit, the City of Chicago adopted a new General Order purporting to prohibit the practice going forward. Cicero Gang Ordinance: Under former Town President Betty Loren-Maltese, the Town of Cicero passed an ordinance attempting to "criminalize" the mere act of being associated with a street gang, and people were being arrested and sued civilly without having committed any specific crime. Working pro bono, we successfully had the ordinance declared unconstitutional. David Haywood: In the course of this litigation, we learned that the Chicago Police Department had a policy and practice of falsely signing one another's names to "sworn" and notarized criminal complaints without attribution or any indication on the face of the document that it was a forgery. The Department argued that the practice was justified in the interests of convenience, but the Seventh Circuit recently declared it unconstitutional. Haywood v. Chicago, 378 F.3d 714 (7th Cir. 2004). Contact Loevy & Loevy today to discuss your civil rights law matter, whether it concerns discrimination, an illegal search or seizure, violation of a Constitutional amendment (1st, 4th), police brutality, or other injustice.
