Discrimination/Employment

Loevy & Loevy also pursues a limited number of employment discrimination lawsuits in cases where there is strong evidence that discrimination has occurred. Recent examples include:

Robbins Company: Loevy & Loevy brought a mass action on behalf of 23-plaintiffs alleging systemic racial discrimination at a garbage incinerator plant. The case recently settled for $900,000 in damages.

United Airlines: A black, over-40, male (who thus did not look much like the other flight attendants) brought suit after his wrongful termination by United Airlines. United initially won summary judgment, but Loevy & Loevy was successful in getting that decision reversed by the Seventh Circuit in an important Title VII case which has already been cited almost 100 times since it was decided in 2001.Gordon v. United Airlines, 246 F3d 878 (7th Cir. 2001). At trial, Loevy & Loevy defeated the law firm of Mayor, Brown and recovered $200,000 in compensatory and punitive damage at a trial before Judge Leinenweber. Mr. Gordon also won reinstatement from his wrongful termination and has since resumed flying for United.

The Chicago Police Department: Loevy & Loevy also represents three Chicago Police Officers in their suit over the racially hostile work environment which permeated the 18th District. Numerous police officers (white and black) have given testimony supporting the claims, which are pending before Judge Filip. As an aside, it is not uncommon for police officers to seek out Loevy & Loevy for representation given our unparalleled reputation in the police community for tenacious litigation to achieve justice; where police officers have experienced civil rights abuses (including being victims of excessive force and First Amendment violations), we are flattered to have been chosen to pursue many worthy cases on their behalf.

American Medical Response of Illinois: Ana Menchaca was a manager for an ambulance company who experienced discrimination on the basis of her gender. We co-tried the case with another firm before Judge Kennelly, and the jury awarded $127,000 in compensatory damages and $381,000 in punitive damages.

Ameritech: A former African American manager at Ameritech's Highland Park office was fired for pretextual reasons after bringing in African American technicians to a formerly all-white office. Judge Andersen recently denied summary judgment, and the case should go to trial in 2006.
